Background of the Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of mortality among women globally, and dietary habits significantly influence the risk of developing these conditions. In Plateau State, Nigeria, cultural dietary practices and limited awareness may contribute to the prevalence of heart-related ailments among women. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, are pivotal in educating and encouraging patients to adopt heart-healthy diets. Assessing their role in this context is essential for developing effective interventions.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of diet in preventing CVDs, there is limited information on how effectively nurses in Plateau State promote heart-healthy eating habits among women. Understanding the extent of nurses' involvement and the challenges they face can inform strategies to enhance dietary interventions and reduce CVD incidence.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the current practices of nurses in promoting heart-healthy diets among women in Plateau State.
2. To identify the barriers nurses encounter in encouraging dietary modifications.
3. To assess the impact of nurses' dietary counseling on women's eating behaviors and cardiovascular health.
Research Questions
1. What strategies do nurses employ to promote heart-healthy diets among women in Plateau State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in advocating for dietary changes?
3. How effective are nurses' interventions in altering women's dietary habits and reducing CVD risk?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses actively engage in promoting heart-healthy diets among women in Plateau State.
2. Nurses encounter significant barriers, such as cultural beliefs and limited resources, in promoting dietary changes.
3. Nurses' dietary interventions lead to positive changes in women's eating behaviors and a reduction in CVD risk.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on registered nurses working in primary and secondary healthcare facilities in Plateau State. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires and interviews with nurses and female patients. Limitations may include self-reported data biases and the inability to establish causality due to the study's cross-sectional design.
